The precise dressing roll with profile


Diamond profile dressing rolls are high-precision dressing tools which have been developed to achieve long tool lives and maximum precision at short dressing intervals. Reliable reproducibility is ensured by mapping the roller workpiece profile, which is reproduced over the grinding wheel in the plunge-cutting process.

A prerequisite for the use of the rotary dressing tools is the installation of a sufficiently dimensioned spindle drive on the machine side. The profile of the dressing tool is workpiece-specific. Higher quantities are required to achieve the corresponding economic efficiency.

Depending on the profile design, profile accuracies in the overall tolerance range of ≤ 0.002 mm can be achieved for dressing rolls manufactured using the negative method. On profile areas particularly at risk of wear, the use of partial edge reinforcement by means of special diamonds brings an improvement in service life. 

Single-layer or multi-layer diamond coatings applied to metal substrates (positive process) in an electroplated bond are suitable for the machining of prototypes and small series at moderate manufacturing costs with moderate tool life. 

The prerequisite for dressing with diamond profile dressing rolls is a


relative movement between dressing roll and grinding wheel. Therefore, dressing rolls must be equipped with their own drive.


The direction of rotation can be synchronous or counter-rotating whereby
the dressing forces are greater in up-cut than in down-cut dressing.
In practice, speed ratios around 0.8 are realistic.

At lower speed differences (towards 1.0), the dressing forces increase. The static and dynamic stiffnesses of the dressing system have a significant influence on the dressing result. When dressing profiles, it is essential to provide dressing roller bearings on both sides.


Particular importance must be attached to the geometric concentricity of the dressing shaft as well as the balancing quality: the radial and axial run-out error of the diamond dressing roll arbor must not be greater than 0.002mm. The mandrel diameter should be selected as large as possible because of the required rigidity. The required tolerance combination between dressing shaft bearing and arbor is the pairing H3/h2. The fit clearance should be 0.003 - 0.005.

The installation of a separate coolant device for the dressing unit is also essential. Coolant quantity and pressure are comparable to the values during
 grinding. The coolant nozzle should be positioned tangentially in the direction of grinding wheel
direction of rotation and as close as possible to the dressing point.
